There are still traces that bear witness to the fact that as long ago as 5000 to 5700 years before Christ people lived in the village of Deutschnofen in the Eggental valley, which is situated at the foot of the Latemar mountain. At one time it was believed that the name was derived from the words “deutschen Ofen” (German oven), in which the Hessian and Swabian peoples melted the ore that they had mined. However this is only speculation. Today we know that the forests were cleared by Romanic inhabitants and the name “nove” (new) first appeared in around 888 AD, with the name “toitonica” being added later. The present day name of Deutschnofen then developed from this combination. 70% of the municipality, which is part of the Rosengarten-Latemar area of the Dolomites is covered by forest. In the past, the area’s vast resources of wood were of huge economic importance, however today tourism has become increasingly significant, especially in the ski resort of Obereggen. The many accommodations in Deutschnofen offer a large range of leisure options and culinary delicacies, and are able to fulfil their visitors’ every expectation and make their holiday an unforgettable experience.
Further to the south of Deutschnofen is the village of Petersberg and Maria Weissenstein, which is one of South Tyrol’s best known places of pilgrimage and not to be missed under any circumstances.
